Samsonite Latin America goes from retail-first to digital-first in just 9 months with Shopify Plus

Samsonite is a global leader in travel bags, luggage, and accessories. The 100+ year legacy brand is best known for combining memorable style and rich design technology to produce durable, high-quality products that are perfect for the on-the-go-lifestyle of business professionals and jetsetters alike.

As a traditionally retail-first company, Samsonite needed an ecommerce partner that could help the brand adapt to a digital-first model in order to grow in Latin America.

By migrating to Shopify Plus and leveraging key features like customized checkout, Launchpad, and Shopify Flow among others, Samsonite was able to:

Challenge 

Samsonite's previous ecommerce platform, VTEX, posed some challenges for the team. For starters, the platform was complex to use and required development resources, which made website updates costly and slow.

And when it came to site stability, VTEX wasn't always reliable, especially during high-traffic periods like BFCM and other special promotions. In one instance, the site crashed during Cyber Monday, wiping out millions in potential revenue.

Solution

With agility and site stability top-of-mind, Samsonite decided to migrate to Shopify Plus. The platform has allowed Samsonite to take ownership of their websites; manage all sites in one place; and create a lower barrier of entry for users across the company. Not to mention, dramatically improved the shopping experience with customers who now trust the site to be performant. More than that, Shopify Plus' customized checkout has alleviated some prevalent issues faced by Latin American retailers around offering different payment and shipping options. Custom scripts have simplified just about every aspect of checkout including payment gateways and shipping promotions.

Finally, Shopify has also proven to be significantly more cost-effective both in the short and long-run. With 6000+ apps to choose from that meet every commerce need, integrations are easier, faster, and more cost-effective.

Results

With Shopify Plus, Samsonite was able to launch 12 new websites in just 6-9 months and produce a meaningful increase in page speed and site stability across properties.

The ability to build its tech stack right on top of Shopify with ease proved to be an amazing benefit for the brand who is now able to move intentionally and quickly. Finally, customized checkout has produced a 5-10% lift in conversion and significantly improved the overall customer experience for Samsonite users.
